A statistical analysis of vertical shear effect on tropical cyclone intensity change in the North Atlantic

چکیده
[1] Based on the best track data of tropical cyclones (TCs) in the North Atlantic and the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis during 1981–2008,the effect of vertical wind shear (VWS) between different vertical levels and with different directions of shear on TC intensity change for TCs of different intensities, translational speeds, and latitudes were statistically analyzed. The results show that TC intensity change and VWS are generally negatively correlated, indicating the overall negative effect of VWS on TC intensity. The strong, slow moving, and low latitude TCs are strongly affected by VWS in a deep layer, while the weak, fast moving, and high latitude TCs are subject to strong effect by VWS in the mid-lower troposphere. Furthermore, overall easterly shear, especially in the mid-lower troposphere, has considerably weaker effects on TC intensity change than westerly shear because part of the easterly shear could be offset by the beta-induced northwesterly shear. Passive-Microwave-Enhanced Statistical Hurricane Intensity Prediction Scheme
The formulation and testing of an enhanced Statistical Hurricane Intensity Prediction Scheme (SHIPS) using new predictors derived from passive microwave imagery is presented. Passive microwave imagery is acquired for tropical cyclones in the Atlantic and eastern North Pacific basins between 1995 and 2003. Predictors relating to the inner-core (within 100 km of center) precipitation and convecti...

Improve our understanding of the physical processes by which (a) 3-D environmental shears, in particular the low-level meridional shear and upper-level vertical shear affect inner core structure and intensity, and (b) the mesoscale vortices, outer spiral rainbands, inner spiral rainbands, and the eyewall interact and affect TC development and intensity change. General questions to be addressed ...
متن کاملA Revised Tropical Cyclone Rapid Intensification Index for the Atlantic and Eastern North Pacific Basins
A revised rapid intensity index (RII) is developed for the Atlantic and eastern North Pacific basins. The RII uses large-scale predictors from the Statistical Hurricane Intensity Prediction Scheme (SHIPS) to estimate the probability of rapid intensification (RI) over the succeeding 24 h utilizing linear discriminant analysis. Separate versions of the RII are developed for the 25-, 30-, and 35-k...
متن کاملThe first South Atlantic hurricane: Unprecedented blocking, low shear and climate change
[1] In March 2004 the first-ever reported hurricane in the South Atlantic hit southern Brazil. Here we show that Catarina initiated as an extratropical cyclone in a frontal system, undergoing Tropical Transition two days later under persistent low vertical wind shear over near-average water temperatures. The trajectory derived from an automatic tracking scheme showed a rare loop before the cycl...
